Rajska Zahrada Metro
Title:  Rajska Zahrada Metro
Description:  This is one of the newer Metro stations, built aboveground in 1998 (although the Metro tracks are in a tubular bridge), at Rajska Zahrada, on Linku B (the yellow, or B line). Its only one stop from Cerny Most, the Eastern terminus.

Old Metro Train Builder Plate
Title:  Old Metro Train Builder Plate
Description:  This is the builder plate of the old Russian Metro train. While the Krylice may be hard to read if you dont know Russian, note that the date of construction was 1976, meaning that while this train is much older than whats running now, it wouldnt have been one of the original ones from 1974.

Old Metro Train in Haje
Title:  Old Metro Train in Haje
Description:  For the 35th anniversary of the Prague Metro (or at least some anniversary or another, as Ive looked up one source that claims the Metro started operations in 1974), DPP got their oldest Metro train out of storage to do some commemorative runs, and miraculously, it seemed to make it through the day without being trashed, unlike a second-generation train on its recent last run. Being Russian-made, these trains were originally designed for the Moscow Metro, and similar trains can also be seen on the Budapest metro.

CD Class 814 at Night
Title:  CD Class 814 at Night
Description:  I took this as I was waiting for our train to board. The photo is too blurry to determine the train number (another limitation of the cameraphone), but Im assuming this is a Class 814 railbus, the 812 Class listed in earlier spotters guides being the prototype (although as far as I know several were built), and the 814 being the production model.

Ceska Trebova Trainboard
Title:  Ceska Trebova Trainboard
Description:  We were worried we might have to spend the night in Ceska Trebova before we even got there, with the only saving grace being that late April and early May in the Czech Republic isnt too nasty, and Nadrazi Ceska Trebova is heated anyway. In the end, though, two of the trains to Prague were so late that, in addition to eliciting stories from me about Amtrak, it enabled us to get to Prague in time to get some sleep, albeit after having to get the night bus.

Title:  Nadrazi Rudoltice v Cechach
Description:  This was Rudoltice, where we changed for yet another local to Lanskroun. Normally, this would not be the case, as at the vast majority of times its easier to get a direct local from Ceska Trebova to Lanskroun.

Pardubice Hlavni Nadrazi
Title:  Pardubice Hlavni Nadrazi
Description:  This was in Pardubice Hlavni Nadrazi. One thing that I learned while researching these captions is that Pardubice, contrary to what many people think, is in Bohemia, rather than Moravia, as only the Southeast of Pardubicky Kraj is actually in Moravia, meaning Brno, Olomouc, Zlin, Prerov, Vsetin, Prostejov, Trebic, Jihlava, Kromeriz, Znojmo, Ostrava, Frydek-Mistek, Sumperk, and Uhersky Brod.

Andel Metro
Title:  Andel Metro
Description:  Andel is one of the few stations thats been left completely in its Communist condition by the post-Communist government, with the exception of the name change, from Moskevska. These "bronzes," as Ive heard them called, survive, as well as a huge "Moskva Praha" sign at the Na Knizeci end, commemorating the "friendship" between Moscow and Prague. Each one of the bronzes commemorates a different aspect of the "friendship." This one simply says "Pratelstvi," or "Friendship."

Andel Metro, Picture 7
Title:  Andel Metro, Picture 7
Description:  This bronze appears to commemorate Vladimr Remek, the first Czech cosmonaut, who would have flown with the Soviets. Since there are two cosmonauts in this bronze, however, it isnt clear whether this is supposed to be Yuri Gagarin and Remek, or simply supposed to be about Soviet-Czech space cooperation generally.

Andel Metro, Picture 8
Title:  Andel Metro, Picture 8
Description:  This bronze is the most blatantly Communist one, with the hammer and sickle flag. In Communist Czechoslovakia 1948-1989, it was said to be not the Soviet flag, but the "Flag of the Czechoslovak Communist Party," and was flown over the Czech flag on flagpoles. People were never supposed to fly a Czech flag without flying a hammer and sickle above it, in fact, and if you had a sticky flag in your window it was the same situation. This latter practice can be seen in the movie "Kolya." Today, KSCM, the modern Czech Communist party, no longer flies this flag from their headquarters, but many of their (very old) activists still carry it at demonstrations and rallies.

Nadrazi Cercany Platform Construction
Title:  Nadrazi Cercany Platform Construction
Description:  My record indicate that I took this on May 15th, 2009, when the canopies were up and the concrete for platform itself was about to be poured. This is part of a larger project, seen in many of my other photos, to refurbish and modernise Nadrazi Cercany, along with the rest of the Prague-Ceske Budejovice corridor. It looks like the main station facilities may be moved south, judging from the position of the platform.

Schedule with F.A. Gerstner
Title:  Schedule with F.A. Gerstner
Description:  Browsing the schedule while waiting for my train, I discovered that one of the through trains is named for Franz Anton Ritter von Gerstner, who wrote the first comprehensive study of the American rail industry, "Die innern Communicationen, which he wrote during his travels in 1838-1839, dying before it could be published. His wife eventually published it in 1842, and it was reprinted in English some years ago. He is significant to Czech railway history because he was involved in building the Ceske Budejovice-Linz mainline.

Ex-CSD 354.195 at Nadrazi Dejvice
Title:  Ex-CSD 354.195 at Nadrazi Dejvice
Description:  This shot was pure luck. I was sitting in the beer garden at Nadrazi Dejvice with some friends when suddenly I heared a decellerating steam locomotive. I jumped up and started my camcorder, but my cameraphone responded sooner, and so I got this shot. This locomotive was ex-CSD #354195, built in 1925 by CMK.

DPP 2500, Last Russian Prague Metro Train in Radlicka,
Title:  DPP 2500, Last Russian Prague Metro Train in Radlicka,
Description:  While if I'm not mistaken this wasn't the last day for this unrebuilt Russian train to run (supposedly it was pulled from service on July 2nd, 2009), it was close to the very last. Supposedly the graffiti was cleaned off for the final run. Now these are consigned to history....sort of. The A and B lines are still worked exclusively by them in rebuilt form. The only truly recent trains on the Metro are on the C line.

CD 682007-0 in Praha Hlavni Nadrazi, Picture 3
Title:  CD 682007-0 in Praha Hlavni Nadrazi, Picture 3
Description:  I took this at the start of a trip I took with my aforementioned friend to Hradec Kralove. We had decided on it more or less on a whim, almost cancelling the trip because of massive flooding the previous day, which was still being cleaned up. Ultimately, although Moravia was badly damaged, Bohemia escaped well enough so that trains were running on the 26th of June, when we left. This wasnt our train, though, as Pendolinos to the East run via Pardubice, rather than Hradec, and in any case this one was for Vienna (Wien). This was the first time I had seen one in Hlavni Nadrazi, so me and my friend took several minutes to get photos and video of it. Luckily, I also had my real camera again, since I decided the occasion was worth adding to the backlog of film.

CD 750162-0 in Hradec Kralove Hlavni Nadrazi
Title:  CD 750162-0 in Hradec Kralove Hlavni Nadrazi
Description:  Heres another "bespectacled" diesel locomotive, only this time a Class 750. The 750 class is simply an early-1990s rebuild of a 753. Actually, the only original bespectacled diesels were the 753 and 754 classes, so today there are some rebuilt 753 Class units, designated 753.7, and then there are the rebuilt Classes 750, 752 (not to be confused with ZSSK Class 752, which is the same class as CD Class 751), and 752.6.

CD 754048-7 at Hradec Kralove Hlavni Nadrazi
Title:  CD 754048-7 at Hradec Kralove Hlavni Nadrazi
Description:  When we got to Hradec Kralove, we were treated to the sight of an old, and unrebuilt, Class 754 "bespectacled," or "Brejlovec" diesel. My friend hadn't photographed one of these yet, and I decided to take a few shots too, since I don't know how much longer they'll still be in service. I've been a bit surprised in the past year in that I've been finding these diesels more often, rather than less often, and I can't figure out why that is. Maybe it's that the allocations have changed.

Class 111 in Praha Hlavni Nadrazi
Title:  Class 111 in Praha Hlavni Nadrazi
Description:  The numberplate on this Class 111 was really chewed up, or at least the paint was, so Ive found it unreadable even on the highest-res versions of this. Cameraphone limitations again... In any case, as always this locomotive wasnt our main power, as we had a diesel on the front. The route would be a really odd way to get to Ceske Budejovice, via Beroun and Zdice, that I didnt know existed until this trip. Me and my friends would ultimately get off at Jince.

Class 130 Electric Locomotive
Title:  Class 130 Electric Locomotive
Description:  The 1950s-era Czech electrics are gradually being phased out, with more in scrap lines everyday, but some of the later classes to be built in the same rounded style, which were built well into the 1970s, continue to survive. Again, the bad cameraphone resolution prevents me from reading the number of this one, but you can tell its a Class 130 from the boxy blister on the top of it (Im not sure for what, as I dont have a proper manual for these). Its true that ex-CSD Class 125s have this too, but all of them are now in service on ZSSK in Slovakia, not CD. Note also the CD Cargo logo on this Class 130, marking it at least in theory as a freight unit.

Express Pan At Horovice
Title:  Express Pan At Horovice
Description:  This was our train back to Prague, appearing in the low light (and slow shutter), to be racing through the station. It wasnt, of course.

Nadrazi Horovice
Title:  Nadrazi Horovice
Description:  Instead of doubling back through Jince for our return to Prague, we had one of our friends drive us to Horovice, which was easier from the pub we were at (he hadnt been drinking).

Nadrazi Horovice, Picture 2,
Title:  Nadrazi Horovice, Picture 2,
Description:  Horovice, while not a very old station as far as I know, is more or less steam-era station, and has most of its steam-era features preserved. Even better, it has far fewer broken windows and far less graffiti than the typical station, of any age, in the modern Czech Republic.

Description:  One of the steam-era features of Nadrazi Horovice is this security cage (I shot through the chainlinks), which includes an old-fashioned luggage scale.

Nadrazi Horovice, Picture 4,
Title:  Nadrazi Horovice, Picture 4,
Description:  The "Dopravni Kancelar," or "Transport Office" in a Czech railway station is the freight and management office, if Im not mistaken, rather than the ticket office. Usually the ticket office will be marked "Jizdenky" or "Tickets."
