Title:  ex-CSD 498.022 at Branik, Picture 2
Description:  This was at the time that 498.022 was back further on the bridge out of Branik, but I don't know exactly what order this one is in. I'm fairly certain that the previous shot was of it pulling out, and this was after it was stopped or nearly in place before heading back in.

Krivoklat Destination Board On Excursion Train
Title:  Krivoklat Destination Board On Excursion Train

CD 749162-4
Title:  CD 749162-4
Description:  Those local diesel services in and out of Cercany which are not handled by 810 railbuses are usually operated by Russian double-decker coaches pulled by Class 742 and 749 diesels, which are getting quite old at this point, along with the cars. Here #749 162-4 sits in Cercany, ready to depart for Praha Hlavni Nadrazi via Vrane nad Vltavou.

CD Log Cars
Title:  CD Log Cars
Description:  Ceske Drahy have been handling an unusually large amount (at least to me) of log traffic through Cercany lately. The yard seems to be used as a loading or possibly marshalling facility, as most of the traffic seems to sit here for awhile without any locomotives on.

Title:  CD 740561-6

EX-CD 740619-2 and CD 742369-2
Title:  EX-CD 740619-2 and CD 742369-2
Description:  On the same day that I caught 740 561-6 and 740 619-2 in Cercany, I also noticed 742 369-2, still in CD colors, working what looked like a freight, although it stopped in the station for a signal, and I didn't shoot the departure.

EX-CD 740619-2
Title:  EX-CD 740619-2
Description:  Ex-CD #740 619-2 now works, if I'm not mistaken, for a construction contractor whose name is usually shortened to "Doprava," which means "transport" in Czech. At least, with the yellow and blue paint I'm assuming that, unless I'm missing something. That's Ex-CD #740 561-6 over on the left in the background.

Liberec Tram 50 at Na rybnicku.
Title:  Liberec Tram 50 at Na rybnicku.
Description:  I like my Ikoflex, especially because of its defacto 50mp resolution, at least when it's used right. The name on the tram stop, while nevertheless unreadable, is Na rybnicku.

Liberec tram 50 at Na rybnicku, Picture 2
Title:  Liberec tram 50 at Na rybnicku, Picture 2
Description:  This is the most I can zoom in without getting too much grain, mostly from the scanner, though, and not the film. I'm concerned the film is another reason why that Na rybnicku sign is blurred, as it's Portra and not Velvia. Anyway, at least you get a better look at the tram, which is a Tatra T3, if I'm not mistaken, but equipped slightly differently from a Prague one.

Tatra T3 Tram In Front Of The Severoceske Muzeum
Title:  Tatra T3 Tram In Front Of The Severoceske Muzeum
Description:  The tram is a Tatra T3, although I didn't get the number. The building is the North Bohemia Museum in Liberec, officially known as the Severoceske Muzeum, which is a history and sometimes art museum. I found one guide who spoke English, although I did have to communicate in Czech with everyone else, which was easier than I expected.

CD 451076-4 "City Frog" At Praha Hlavni Nadrazi
Title:  CD 451076-4 "City Frog" At Praha Hlavni Nadrazi
Description:  Recently, Ceske Drahy rebranded many of their local services out of Prague, using their new 471 and 971 EMUs, as "City Elephant" services. The old 451 and 452 pantographs have never been repainted, though, so some joker, either a vandal or an actual Ceske Drahy employee, has dubbed #451 076-4 "City Frog," I'm sure as a joke about how ridiculous the name is. If you can name a 471 an elephant when it doesn't have elephant ears or any other feature resembling an elephant, then why not call a 451 a frog? The "face" of it might actually look more like a frog than a 471 resembles an elephant, actually.

Plzensky Prazdroj Industrial Railway
Title:  Plzensky Prazdroj Industrial Railway

HWB VT52 in Masarykovo Nadrazi, Picture 3
Title:  HWB VT52 in Masarykovo Nadrazi, Picture 3
Description:  VT52 was a multiple unit, of course, and this car looks like it was from a different set originally. The vintage-looking Konrad beer ad is an interesting touch, as I'm sure this is, in fact, a vintage machine.

Title:  HWB VT52 in Masarykovo Nadrazi, Picture 4
Description:  Here's the weirdest thing. The trainboard says the train is on a Zittau-Liberec local service, and the board doesn't look to be just for show, yet here the train was in Masarykovo Nadrazi in Prague, roughly two hours from Liberec and even further from Zittau, what's up with that?

Mural in Nadrazi Smichov
Title:  Mural in Nadrazi Smichov
Description:  The current Nadrazi Smichov, from what I can gather, is a Communist-era building. I don't know a lot about the place. Nevertheless, regardless of origins, it has this large Communist-era mural in the main concourse glorifying working people. The Communists weren't nice, that much is certain from talking to average Czechs, but it is a nice mural, and I like the message of it, even if the Communists were lying about their intentions.

CD 451001-2 in Hlavni Nadrazi (date is guessed)
Title:  CD 451001-2 in Hlavni Nadrazi (date is guessed)
Description:  This is, as far as I know, the pioneering Class 451 "Pantograph" EMU from 1964, unless this is a renumbered fake. They've tried to glorify its heritage somewhat by painting it in the original CSD green-blue with red stripes, only without the red stars and with the modern CD logo.

Doprava 753306-0 with other unit and brakevan
Title:  Doprava 753306-0 with other unit and brakevan
Description:  Original unrebuilt CKD Class 753 "bespectacled" diesels are rare nowadays, but if I'm not mistaken 753306-0 is one such unit. It no longer works for CD or ZSSK, however, but has apparently been acquired by the maintenance contractor commonly calling themselves "Doprava." I took this shot at Cercany.

Title:  Speed Signs (date is a guess, location is an estimate)
Description:  I've forgotten exactly where I took this, but I really like how it came out. It's definitely one of my better motion shots, at least in my opinion. Those speeds, incidentally, are in Km/h, so we weren't actually going very fast. The shutter was just a bit slow.

Flowers In Nadrazi Dejvice (date is a guess)
Title:  Flowers In Nadrazi Dejvice (date is a guess)
Description:  I'm fairly sure that I took these shots in October, or possibly November, of 2007, so some of the flowers hadn't wilted yet. Nadrazi Dejvice, like a number of smaller Czech railway stations, has a number of flower boxes on it, and I realised that this might make a nice composition.

Title:  ZSSK 350016-2 arriving at Nadrazi Holesovice
Description:  This WAS my train. I don't remember which one it was, but I'm pretty sure it was EC170 "Hungaria," as it has a Slovak Class 350 on the point. EC172, the other afternoon train for Berlin, originates in Wien (Vienna), so it wouldn't have Slovak power.

Hlavni Nadrazi Construction (date is a guess)
Title:  Hlavni Nadrazi Construction (date is a guess)
Description:  In 2008, Hlavni Nadrazi was undergoing a long and thorough renovation, which was already several months old, and continues as I write this a year later. When I took this, the tracks under the trainshed were being rebuilt, and most of this work is done now, the project having shifted to the station building. In 2007, the trainshed still looked almost steam-era, today it looks almost modern, although many of the historic features, like the trainshed itself, have been retained.

CD 471010-9 After Arrival at Kutna Hora Hlavni Nadrazi
Title:  CD 471010-9 After Arrival at Kutna Hora Hlavni Nadrazi
Description:  I shot most of my Kutna Hora pictures on Ektachrome, and from the look of how grainy these shots are, grainier than any slides Ive ever done, Im assuming it was Elite 400, although I seem to remember it being 200. I really doubt that 200 could look this bad, though, at least at full resolution. Oddly, the main reason Im not posting more of these is that most of them are going to end up in an NRHS slide show sooner or later. Theyre the main shots I have of this trip, so Im hoping that the story and the subject matter will be more important than resolution....

CD #471017-4 Preparing to Depart Kutna Hora Hlavni Nadrazi
Title:  CD #471017-4 Preparing to Depart Kutna Hora Hlavni Nadrazi
Description:  Heres the train that I took home. Worth noting in this photo is the ad on the side of the train, for a movie, Gympl, which glorifies grafitti vandals who trash trains. Its typical of the kinds of self-defeating ads that public transport services accept, and begs the question once again of why theyre tolerated.

CD 113003-8
Title:  CD 113003-8
Description:  Now...back to the electric railway to Bechyne. This was the train I took, not the preserved original one (which does occassionally run railfan trips), but the modern one, however loose a sense. This Class 113 electric is probably about 30 years old or more, and would never normally be used for much but switching the yard of a large mainline station, but obviously it would be wasteful and bad for the track on this single-track branch to have a 163 or 363 class running this service. The dim light you see here is partly an illusion, as it was slightly gloomy out by this time of day, it was late in the day, and I only had 200 ISO film. This, however, was one of my last shots before I switched to Tri-X, which is 400.

In The Snow
Title:  In The Snow
Description:  I just spotted this shot going through this particular roll of slides, and decided to include it simply because I like how it looks. The fact that snow was still on the ground in late March illustrates that, even in the global-warming era, rural Bohemia still has proper winters.

Nadrazi Sudomerice u Bechyne
Title:  Nadrazi Sudomerice u Bechyne
Description:  This was maybe the most important station on the route...it actually had a passing siding!! Generally, this line was one of the crudest electric railways that Ive ever been on, but there were passengers on the train, to be sure, and there is something charming about primitive branchlines, even if modernization would encourage more "normal" (non-railfan) people to ride.

Nadrazi Tabor
Title:  Nadrazi Tabor
Description:  This was when I arrived in Tabor, where I had been a number of times before riding through, but had never noticed the size of this station. It sort of looks like a minor through or even branchline station thats been multiplied in length, and maybe thats what the architects intended in order to save money. Tabor is actually a terminal station and a junction, however, as the line the Bechyne originates here, commonly referred to as the Frantisek Krizik Electric Railway. This line happens to be the oldest in the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, being constructed in 1903, but more on that in a moment...

Train to Bechyne, Picture 2
Title:  Train to Bechyne, Picture 2
Description:  Here the train is entering the wye at Bechyne Zastavka, a request station that is the last on the line before Bechyne. The wye serves two purposes, however. A locomotive that can only be easily run in one direction can be turned around on it, its true, but the Class 113 is a unidirectional locomotive, theres a passing siding at Bechyne, and most importantly, theres a freight customer on the wye.

Description:  Heres an alternate shot on the wye, with better sky detail. It is interesting how much of a difference exposure control makes.

Wooden Freight Vans
Title:  Wooden Freight Vans
Description:  One of the more surprising things I spotted on this trip were these wooden freight vans, or boxcars in American terminology. These went out of service in the U.S. in the 1950s, for the most part, and in most of Europe by the 1980s, but if you really scout around Eastern Europe it still is sometimes possible to find them.
