I actually have German rail photos going back to 1998, but for the moment all of the stuff I'll be uploading will be more recent. I've always loved Deutche Bahn and the various urban transit systems in Germany, and I regret the fact that I can't upload more! :-)

Siemens NGT8DD Tram Working For DVB (Dresden transit) At Postplatz
Description:
Dresden used to have a fleet of Tatra T4D-MT trams (and still do, just not exclusively), not unlike the Tatra T3s used in Prague, but in recent years DVB, the Dresden transit authority, have been buying new articulated trams from Bombardier. I haven't ridden any of the new 12-axle TD12DD trams yet, but I have ridden these NGT8DDs, and they're great. They're quiet, smooth, quick, and obviously zero-emissions. In fact, I would venture to say that they should probably be models for future designs, as I've never ridden a better class of tram, although maybe I shouldn't be so enthusiastic without knowing how reliable they are. On the positive side, none of them broke down while I was riding them.

DB 101137-8 Arriving At Dresden Hbf
Description:
I first rode behind a DB 101 Class electric in 1998, on an Intercity service from Emmerich to Koln. That was a very memorable trip, and since then I've ridden behind a 101 on other occasions as well. They're very fast (for a locomotive as opposed to a trainset) being able to hit 220Km/h with little effort, although officially they only do 200Km/h in service with their 10-12 car Intercities, very powerful (the Class 103 is the only large German electric class to ever beat it), and just...well...good looking. The bright cherry red that DB uses for its Intercity equipment nowadays suits them especially well. Therefore, I figure I should use any excuse to put a picture of a 101 on my website, so here it is. I took this is Dresden Hauptbahnhof in 2005, where I was catching a Eurocity service to Prague. They cut the 101 off in Bad Schandau or Decin, if I'm not mistaken, replacing it with a CD Class 363.

DB 503678-4 Running Light Through Dresden Hbf
Description:
This was a very lucky shot, although not perfect. I had gotten on the train, and was regretting the fact that I didn't have the chance to catch this earlier, when it went by on the mainline when I was in the wrong part of Dresden to get a good angle on it (I only saw and heard the exhaust through the trees). Much to my amazement, my camera was already in my hands, and there it was, moving slowly enough for me to get this shot!!! It's an old DRG Class 50 2-10-0, repainted for DB, as after World War II DB didn't get rid of steam until 1978, and even after that the DR kept it, so today a lot of it has been preserved.

Tatra T4 Tram Approaching Dresden Hbf
Description:
I took this shot because I like the way the world underneath the bridge is dark (but not so dark that you can't see shadow details like the bicycles), while the world outside is illuminated by comparison. The yellow paint on the tram and the street sign are nice touches, too.

Berlin Hauptbahnhof
Description:
After I arrived in Berlin, there wasn't much to do for a few hours, so I walked around taking photos before getting the next train #NZ242 for Bruxelles-Midi, at 2146. Berlin Hbf was recently restored and rebuilt massively, and bears little resemblence at this point to the steam-era station. It's as much mall as station, like Washington Union, Cleveland Union Terminal (but with more trains), London Liverpool Street, or London Waterloo in this respect. The food isn't too bad, and the shopping is so-so. I didn't find anything worth buying.

Description:
This was my train, a Nacht Zug, or Couchette, which had just got me into Berlin in the extreme early morning hours, hence the darkness. These Class 120 electrics aren't monstrously fast, but they're powerful, versatile, and enough.

DB 402 Class ICE High Speed Trains In Berlin Hauptbahhof
Description:
Built by Siemens, the 402 Class ICE high speed trains were the second production variant of the ICE, introduced in the mid-1990s. They were smaller and slower than the original 401 Class (250 Km/h instead of 280), but they offered better safety, and their shorter length allowed them to handle more minor routes. In this case, though, it doesn't look to have worked, as two sets had to be coupled together.

DB Intercity Seen From Berlin Television Tower
Description:
I attempted a number of shots from the Berlin Television Tower, but regrettably this was one of the only ones that came out because the windows were very dirty that day. I can't tell if this train was an Intercity or a Eurocity, but it would be one or the other, as that's DB Intercity equipment, which is also used on the Eurocities.

ex-DR 503707-2 at Rangierbahnhof Tempelhof
Description:
This was one of the highpoints of my visit to Berlin. You know how I said that everything in the yard was just left as-is? Well, that even included this former Deutsche Reichsbahn Class 50 2-10-0, although it's been stripped for parts. Someone repainted it, though, in order to control rust on it and make it look nicer in what is now a relatively clean and green park.

Bruckenmeisterei Werkstatt, Berlin
Description:
And...here it is, an active rail facility, Bruckenmeisterei Werkstatt, still in existence in a railyard that's been abandoned for so long that trees are growing through the tracks and the whole place has become a park. I wasn't trespassing when I took this, by the way, but rather I found a crack in the door just barely big enough for my lens, and then I had to crop this before I posted it. That train sitting there, by the way, is an old untergrundbahn, or subway/metro train, and I have no idea what it's doing here.

Pipe Tunnel, Rangierbahnhof Tempelhof, Berlin
Description:
This tunnel, not original, but made out of a pipe found somewhere, is part of a park that used to be a railway freight yard. The tour guide said the yard was originally called Rangierbahnhof Tempelhof, although all the signs I saw said Bruckmeisterei, so whichever one it is. Much of the infrastructure, all of it steam-era, is still intact, as the yard was in control of the Soviets (as was all of the rail infrastructure in Berlin) after World War II, and lacking adequate international traffic to keep it going, it was eventually abandoned, with almost everything sitting abandoned until 1989, when it became the park that it is now.

Ceiling of Berlin Hbf
Description:
The new Berlin Hbf, while based on an older design, is so heavily rebuilt at this point that it's basically a two-year-old station. It's crammed with shops of all kinds, in addition to hosting an immense number of trains everyday (It would be cool to know the precise number, but I don't.). While waiting for my train, and photographing the Scandlines night train that had just arrived, I also noticed the opportunity to compose this shot, so I did.

109-1 was originaly 109 084, back when it worked for Deutsche Bahn. Now classified as a Deutsche Bahn Class 109 electric, originally it was classified as a DR E11 Class prior to 1989. While quite old now, being built sometime in the early 1960s, it still is working these night trains.

Breakfast on Deutsche Bahn (location is a rough guess)
Description:
I unfortunately didn't think to shoot this picture until I had finished with breakfast, so you don't get to see the food. I was very good, though. NZ242 gets into Brussels so early that in the winter it's still dark out, so this was still essentially taken at night, with my flash. The lighting is still weirdly blue, though. I actually got ripped off on my tickets....again, as the agent sold me a first class ticket when I didn't ask for one. A benefit of this, though, was that I got a much nicer place to sleep than usual, on linen, and got a good breakfast the next morning. DB can certainly be called first class in any case, but a first class ticket was actually nice to have in the end, and not as expensive as it could have been, either. Almost anyplace else in the world I wouldn't have been able to afford it at all, and the trip would have never happened.

Description:
This is, as far as I know, one of the long Bombardier trams in Dresden, making its stop at Hauptbahnhof. I dont know of hand whether this is an 8-axle or 12-axle unit, however, as the photo doesnt show the length or the number.

Arriva ALEX 183001 in Regensburg Hbf
Description:
This Class 183 is the standard electric locomotive used by ALEX, as well as the Vogtlandbahn before they switched over to EMUs (This is from WIkipedia, I dont know if its accurate since in 2005 I noticed they were already all-EMU). This is #183001, although I dont know if its genuinely the first of the class. The Class 183 is a variant of the ES 64 U "Eurosprinter" electric used by the OBB and DB, designated internally in Seimens as the ES 64 U4. On the OBB, the ES 64 U is classified as Rh 1016, and on the DB as Class 182. SZ, the Slovenian railway, although has a few, classifying them as Class 541. In spite of looking quite brutal and heavy, these locomotives, while indeed powerful with 8,600 horsepower, can operate at 230Km/h (143 m.p.h.), and reach a top speed of 357Km/h (222 m.p.h.), making them one of the fastest electric locomotive classes in history. Actually, given that most German and Austrian coaching stock is only rated for 200Km/h (124 m.p.h.) this is overengineering in the extreme.

DB 111068-3 in Munchen Hbf
Description:
I was very happy when we arrived in Munchen Hbf to see several classic German locomotives, in addition to some original Class 401 ICE sets. This is a Class 111, introduced in 1974, and so well-known that it made it into the strategy computer game "Railroad Tycoon II," one of my all-time favorite games. In real life, these locomotives were so successful that 227 were built by various contractors until 1984, and the only ones scrapped to date (two of them) were totalled in accidents. These locomotives have 4990 horsepower, and can reach a maximum operating speed of 160Km/h (99 m.p.h.), although they dont generally work too many express trains anymore. Originally, they werent used in express service, and werent even rated for 160, but from 1980 onwards they were upgraded to support the even-faster (and older) Class 103 express locomotives, although both the 111 and the 103 have now been mostly replaced in this role by the 101 and similar newer classes.

DB 218435-6 in Munchen Hbf
Description:
This is another classic that I spotted, a Class 218 diesel. Although it resembles the old (and even more classic) V200 diesel of the late 1950s, the Class 218 was introduced in 1966, and was initially classified as the V164 before DB changed their numbering and classification system in 1968. It was part of the V160 series of diesel classes intended to replace the V200, which was the first mainline express passenger diesel used extensively by DB. Today, very few diesel locomotives are used in express service in Germany due to extensive electrification, so most work locals on branchlines. We had actually spent much of our trip behind diesels because of diversions and construction work, but this wasnt the usual situation for our train. Getting back to the Class 218, the Class 2,467 horsepower in prototype form (the first 12 in service 1966-1968), but this was upgraded to 2,763 from 1968 onwards, putting it close to American diesels, which at the time were some of the more powerful diesels in the world. Maximum operating speed was and still is 140Km/h, just as fast as all of the electrics of the day except for the 103 (which was allowed a maximum of either 160 or 200 depending on the service, making it the fastest in the world at the time). The 218 was more interesting than is obvious, though. Firstly, it isnt a diesel-electric but a diesel-hydraulic, and in spite of the terrible reputation of this technology, the 218 has been in continuous service for 44 years. In addition, because its a mixed traffic locomotive, it has both a high and a low gear, the low one limiting the top speed to 100Km/h, doubling the tractive effort. Some locomotives originally had a third gear that tripled the tractive effort, although I dont know how many still do. At least one source cites the low-gear top speed as 90Km/h, so this may refer to these units. In 1996-1998, 10 units were re-geared in the opposite way for 160Km/h express services, interestingly out of Munich, being classified during that time as Class 210. Finally, while modern diesel-electric locomotives have dynamic brakes, using the traction motors for braking, the 218 has hydraulic braking that accomplishes the same goal.

I had forgotten all about this shot until I went through the roll of Kodacolor Gold 200 that I shot in Munich. So....this is jumping from the morning of the 18th back to the evening of the 17th. If you look carefully in the middle of the street, you can see some old tram tracks still in place. To the best of my knowledge, theyre out of service due to there being no cantenary on this street. If you follow the tracks back, you eventually get to the park where they hold the Oktoberfest celebrations, arguably the most famous in Germany. Does anybody know the history of these tracks? Im curious.

Regensburg Hbf, Cropped Version With Bikes,
Description:
Regensburg is an old Romanl city dating to about 90 A.D. Most of whats left is medieval in nature, although not so much in the vicinity of the station (that building behind the station on the right looks Baroque). These historic buildings were better preserved than most German buildings in World War II partly because Allied commanders spared it on purpose for its historic value. To me as a modern American living in Europe, though, I was impressed by the extensive use of bicycles in Regensburg, as you can see in the racks on the platform.

Cleaning Hauptbahnhof Sud Tram Stop
Description:
In contrast to Pragues DPP, MVV, the Munich transit authority, is absolutely meticulous about cleaning. DPP do indeed have cleaning staff, but my sense is that theyre badly underfunded and/or understaffed, so there are few tram stops in Prague as well maintained as this one.

DB #115154-7 and 440524-7 in Munchen Hbf
Description:
DBs Class 115 electric locomotives, of which 115154-7 on the left is one, are actually Class 110 and 113 units which have been redesignated for local and autotrain services. Classes 110 and 113 are in turn variants of the original DB E10 Class electrics introduced in 1956, being produced until 1969, with all units being redesignated Classes 110 and 112 in 1968, with an additional Class 114 being created through reclassification of the last 112 Class units in 1988. In addition, in 1991 the older Class 112s were reclassified 113, eliminating Class 112 as a Class designation. These locomotives, while they obviously vary in specifications, hence the different classifications, put out 5,000 horsepower (impressive for 1956), and can run between 120 and 160 Km/h, depending on how theyre equipped. Originally, they were only rated for 130 Km/h, but the higher-speed variants were introduced both from new production and requalification of older units. The prototypes had only been rated for 125, but this was raised so that they could be reclassified as express locomotives. The Class 440 EMU on the right is of an entirely different era, however. Marketed by Alstom as the Coradia Continental, and DB have operated these since 2008. However, they have a longer history in Britain, where they were used on First Great Western starting in the early 2000s, with later production units being classified as Class 180 Adelantes (The earlier Class 175 Units were just called Coradias or Coradia 1000s.). These are actually very fast trains by diesel standards, being capable of operating at 125 m.p.h. The 440s are EMUs, however, as Alsthom market the same carbody series as either. The diesel version is classified as Class 640 or 648 on DB.

DB #401509-5 in Munchen Hbf
Description:
I have a few ICE photos scattered throughout my photo collection, but only a few on Flickr. I took this one in Munchen Hbf as I was about to get on my train (which wasnt an ICE). #401509-5 is one of the original 401 Class ICE sets from the early 1990s, meaning it can cruise as fast as 280 Km/h (173 m.p.h.) given a dedicated high-speed line rated for 280. Thats impressive enough to American ears, but the newer 403 Class can reach 330 Km/h (205 m.p.h.), so it isnt like progress stopped with the first sets, either.

MRCE #189-999-6 in Munchen Hbf
Description:
MRCE, or Mitsui Rail Capital Europe, is the European division of Mitsui Rail Capital (MRC), one of the many companies in the past 15 years specialising in the leasing of rail equipment on an as-needed basis to railway companies. This was the first time that I had seen any leased locomotive in Germany, though, as rolling stock leasing companies more often lease out freight cars, with GATX being one of the oldest and most famous such companies (they also lease locomotives now, even if their freight car leasing business dates back to 1898). GATX got their start in the United States, where rolling stock leasing has generally been ahead of the rest of the world, and MRC, while Japanese-owned, was actually started officially in Illinois (in the U.S.A.) in 1996, riding the wave of locomotive leasing that changed the face of American railroading towards the end of that decade. In Germany, locomotive leasing is relatively new, with leased locomotives being called "dispoloks" following Swiss terminology (if I have my history right). In any case, getting to this locomotive, this is an older variant of the Seimens Eurosprinter, the ES 64 F4, intended mainly for freight service, with 8,583 horsepower and a 140 Km/h maximum operating speed. Nevertheless, as you can see, it can also be used in passenger services, as no freight trains use Munchen Hbf, and I have found many other photos of these units being used here.
