Album Info:I actually have German rail photos going back to 1998, but for the moment all of the stuff I'll be uploading will be more recent. I've always loved Deutche Bahn and the various urban transit systems in Germany, and I regret the fact that I can't upload more! :-)

Munchen Hbf
Title:  Munchen Hbf
Description:  Like most railway stations constructed between the 1940s and the 1980s, many people would consider Munchen Hbf to be ugly. I would argue, however, that since it has been fairly well-maintained, and has fairly clean lines, it isnt as ugly as some stations of its era and style.

Schwandorf Signalbox
Title:  Schwandorf Signalbox
Description:  Im unaware of whether this is still an interlocking signalbox, or something else (probably something else given that DB is one of the most modern railways in the world), but its definitely occupied.

Tram, Picture 2
Title:  Tram, Picture 2
Description:  This is one of the trams operated by MVG, which is the Munich transit authority. I dont know a lot about the system, but this appears to be an R3_3 Class. This was taken on Prielmayerstrasse.

MVG 2211
Title:  MVG 2211
Description:  This was the only tram in Munich that I was able to get the number of, confirming it as an R3_3 class. The numbers on the Munich trams are quite small, so thats why Ive had trouble capturing them properly in a photo.

DB 110432-2, Edited Version, Frankfurt Hbf
Title:  DB 110432-2, Edited Version, Frankfurt Hbf
Description:  Introduced in 1952, and originally designated the E10 Class, these electrics represent one of the oldest surviving locomotive classes in Germany, and for that matter the world. Equally impressive is that these units have managed to stay in passenger service in the country of the ICE. Power output is 3,700Kw, or 5,000 horsepower, which is also impressive for its era, tractive effort is 62,000 lbs., which is also good, and this is distributed through a Bo-Bo (or B-B) wheel configuration, with 85 metric tonnes overall weight (so figure 21.25 tonnes per axle, a heavy axle loading for Europe). The cruising speed for the best-maintained units is 140Km/h, although the maximum design speed is 150Km/h.

DB 401 Class ICE, Edited Version, Frankfurt Hbf
Title:  DB 401 Class ICE, Edited Version, Frankfurt Hbf
Description:  Incredible as it may seem now, the original Class 401 are already over 20 years old and counting, and showing little of their age. I got to meet up with some old American friends on this trip, including one old hot rodder who was suitably impressed, not to mention surprised at our trains age. "It works," he said.

DB 403 Class ICE, Edited Version, Frankfurt Hbf
Title:  DB 403 Class ICE, Edited Version, Frankfurt Hbf
Description:  Heres one of the newer Classes of ICE introduced around the time of my first visit to Germany in 1998. At the time, the Class were still in testing, but now they have been in service for many years. Although there isnt a high-speed line in Germany yet that can accommodate their full 330Km/h (205 m.p.h.) cruising speed, they still get to run quite fast, up to at least 250Km/h on most high-speed lines.

DB 411 Class ICE, Edited Version, Nurnberg Hbf
Title:  DB 411 Class ICE, Edited Version, Nurnberg Hbf
Description:  Also called the ICT for its tilting mechanism, this class of ICE can be spotted by its stubbier nose than the similar (and contemporary) Class 403.

DB Class 111, Edited Version, Nurnberg Hbf
Title:  DB Class 111, Edited Version, Nurnberg Hbf
Description:  Believe it or not, the old DB Class 111 electrics from the 1970s, immortalized in Railroad Tycoon 2 and many other things, are still in service. This one was at Nurnberg (Nuremberg) Hauptbahnhof.

DB 440812-6, Edited Version, Nurnberg Hbf
Title:  DB 440812-6, Edited Version, Nurnberg Hbf
Description:  Although DB are famous for their ICE high-speed trains and respectable Intercities and Eurocities, local services worked by EMUs are still more in abundance. Here a Class 440 EMU, #440812-6, arrives in Nurnberg Hbf. In recent years, local-specific paint schemes have been given up in favor of all-red schemes not dissimilar to those used on Intercities (although the coaching stock on elite locomotive hauled trains and ICEs remains white with a red stripe).

Deutsche Bahn Office Building
Title:  Deutsche Bahn Office Building
Description:  I originally meant this to be a generic shot of some of Frankfurts modern buildings, but in fact this is also rail-related. That skyscraper is actually an office building used by Deutsche Bahn, and the red DB loco is visible close to the roof on the left.

Frankfurt Hbf, Edited Version
Title:  Frankfurt Hbf, Edited Version
Description:  I first got to see Frankfurts impressive Hauptbahnhof in 1998, and it still looks more or less the same. It naturally hosts a lot of ICEs and other express trains, so its fun to watch trains here. The trainshed is also spectacular.

Frankfurt Hbf, Picture 2, Edited Version
Title:  Frankfurt Hbf, Picture 2, Edited Version
Description:  The steam-era beauty of Frankfurt Hbf is to be seen everywhere, even in little details like this clock. More impressive is that this station survived World War II, although Im sure it had to have been rebuilt (I dont know all the history of that).

Frankfurt Tram, Picture 3, Edited Version

Freiburg (Breisgau) Hauptbahnhof
Title:  Freiburg (Breisgau) Hauptbahnhof
Description:  This photo, taken with my cameraphone, was largely a matter of waking up at the right time and place. We took the CityNightLine service to Prague overnight, and I woke up when the train stopped in Freiburg. I took this photo mainly because I was interested in how people had no problem with leaving their bikes chained up overnight. The station management dont seem to have a problem with it either, but most of all it seems like an illogical place to keep your bike. Wouldnt you want it to go to the station? I eventually concluded that these bikes must be owned by people from out of town who commute to Freiburg by train and then take their bike to work.

Bahnhof Dresden Neustadt
Title:  Bahnhof Dresden Neustadt
Description:  I dont the exact age of Dresden Neustadt, but it seems the station dates to the steam era. After all, relatively few stations this ornate were built once electrification started. There are some features that resemble stations on the New York Central, like New York Grand Central, Utica Union, and so on. The arched window and the skylight are the two things that I notice, although I assume it wasnt the same architect.

Bahnhof Dresden Neustadt, Picture 2
Title:  Bahnhof Dresden Neustadt, Picture 2
Description:  Heres the exterior. The distinctive lightning rods and the portals mark this as a German station (unless its earlier, which is possible), but there are still features that resemble American stations, those arched windows, for example. Dresden Neustadt, in spite of not being the main Dresden station, is still quite busy, and I had a small brunch while I was here, since the passenger facilities are better than what youd expect, too.

Synagoge Tram Stop
Title:  Synagoge Tram Stop
Description:  This may be out of chronological order with the Hbf shot, as it doesnt really make sense where this is on my list. In any case, this is the tram stop for the largest Synagogue in Dresden, seen on the right. Its actually a very well-equipped Synagogue, with sports facilities and so on, as well as this dedicated tram stop. The building isnt what it seems the first few times you look at it, as it has many interesting features hiding in plain view. For example, one portion of it (not visible here) is "twisted," in a not-so-obvious way, and it renaissance-style brickwork that you see here looks different depending on how close you are or what angle youre looking at it from. Needless to say, it doesnt look so Renaissance from every angle, as this is a thoroughly modern building. I didnt take this photo for the Synagogue, though. I just saw a tram coming, and took a couple of shots of the tram.

DVB Cargo/Freight Tram for VW, Cropped Version
Title:  DVB Cargo/Freight Tram for VW, Cropped Version
Description:  I see this large, articulated freight (auto-carrier?) tram nearly every time I visit Dresden, but I rarely get a good photo of it. This ones a compromise, being a crop. The tram appears to work for Volkswagen, moving new cars around.

Koln Hauptbahnhof
Title:  Koln Hauptbahnhof
Description:  This shot came out better than I was expecting. I bumped the contrast up by 10% in Gimp, and removed some dust, but ultimately thats all I had to do to it. The thumbnail actually made it look worse. This might be my best photo of Koln Hbf, at least at night.
