PKP EU07-446
Title:  PKP EU07-446
Description:  Ive increasingly been noticing PKP (Polish Railways) electric locomotives venturing into the Czech Republic lately, although I dont know very much about them. I saw this one sitting in a siding in Pardubice, an unlikely location for a foreign locomotive to be parked since few international services originate or terminate in Pardubice.

NR 86902
Title:  NR 86902
Description:  The British Rail Class 86 electric was originally introduced in the 1960s for 100 m.p.h. Intercity passenger services on BR's West Coast Mainline, but today Class 86s have been replaced there by Class 87s and by the new Class 390 Virgin Pendolino tilt trains. Since the 1970s, when the Class 87s came into service, however, Class 86s have been used on mail trains, on the Great Eastern mainline after it was electrified in 1987, on charters, on freights, and in this case, in Maintenance of Way service. It is actually a bit rare to see a proper Network Rail locomotive, but since Network Rail took over their own track maintenance one would have to assume that having some dedicated locomotives have become a good idea.

GNER 91106 "East Lothian" In Leeds New Station
Title:  GNER 91106 "East Lothian" In Leeds New Station
Description:  Services from London King's Cross to Leeds, while not as long a haul as services to Newcastle and Edinburgh, are nevertheless run by GNER with Intercity 225 high-speed trainsets. 225s, while matched sets, are not actually EMUs, but loco-hauled, and all of the locomotives but one (89001 "Avocet") are Class 91 electrics, although sometimes a Class 90 will substitute on the Leeds services since they're far from as fast as the Newcastle and Edinburgh services. Most of the Class 91s have names, this one being 91106 "East Lothian."

DB 101019-8 In Hamburg Hbf

Description:  This was the scene when I got to Hamburg. That beautiful Class 101 electric, #101 019-8, was regrettably not on my train, but another Class 101 was, so I got my railfan's treat of the trip. I love those 101s. :-)

DB 101137-8 Arriving At Dresden Hbf
Title:  DB 101137-8 Arriving At Dresden Hbf
Description:  I first rode behind a DB 101 Class electric in 1998, on an Intercity service from Emmerich to Koln. That was a very memorable trip, and since then I've ridden behind a 101 on other occasions as well. They're very fast (for a locomotive as opposed to a trainset) being able to hit 220Km/h with little effort, although officially they only do 200Km/h in service with their 10-12 car Intercities, very powerful (the Class 103 is the only large German electric class to ever beat it), and just...well...good looking. The bright cherry red that DB uses for its Intercity equipment nowadays suits them especially well. Therefore, I figure I should use any excuse to put a picture of a 101 on my website, so here it is. I took this is Dresden Hauptbahnhof in 2005, where I was catching a Eurocity service to Prague. They cut the 101 off in Bad Schandau or Decin, if I'm not mistaken, replacing it with a CD Class 363.

DB 110432-2, Edited Version, Frankfurt Hbf
Title:  DB 110432-2, Edited Version, Frankfurt Hbf
Description:  Introduced in 1952, and originally designated the E10 Class, these electrics represent one of the oldest surviving locomotive classes in Germany, and for that matter the world. Equally impressive is that these units have managed to stay in passenger service in the country of the ICE. Power output is 3,700Kw, or 5,000 horsepower, which is also impressive for its era, tractive effort is 62,000 lbs., which is also good, and this is distributed through a Bo-Bo (or B-B) wheel configuration, with 85 metric tonnes overall weight (so figure 21.25 tonnes per axle, a heavy axle loading for Europe). The cruising speed for the best-maintained units is 140Km/h, although the maximum design speed is 150Km/h.

DB 111068-3 in Munchen Hbf
Title:  DB 111068-3 in Munchen Hbf
Description:  I was very happy when we arrived in Munchen Hbf to see several classic German locomotives, in addition to some original Class 401 ICE sets. This is a Class 111, introduced in 1974, and so well-known that it made it into the strategy computer game "Railroad Tycoon II," one of my all-time favorite games. In real life, these locomotives were so successful that 227 were built by various contractors until 1984, and the only ones scrapped to date (two of them) were totalled in accidents. These locomotives have 4990 horsepower, and can reach a maximum operating speed of 160Km/h (99 m.p.h.), although they dont generally work too many express trains anymore. Originally, they werent used in express service, and werent even rated for 160, but from 1980 onwards they were upgraded to support the even-faster (and older) Class 103 express locomotives, although both the 111 and the 103 have now been mostly replaced in this role by the 101 and similar newer classes.

CD 113003-8
Title:  CD 113003-8
Description:  Now...back to the electric railway to Bechyne. This was the train I took, not the preserved original one (which does occassionally run railfan trips), but the modern one, however loose a sense. This Class 113 electric is probably about 30 years old or more, and would never normally be used for much but switching the yard of a large mainline station, but obviously it would be wasteful and bad for the track on this single-track branch to have a 163 or 363 class running this service. The dim light you see here is partly an illusion, as it was slightly gloomy out by this time of day, it was late in the day, and I only had 200 ISO film. This, however, was one of my last shots before I switched to Tri-X, which is 400.

Train to Bechyne, Picture 2
Title:  Train to Bechyne, Picture 2
Description:  Here the train is entering the wye at Bechyne Zastavka, a request station that is the last on the line before Bechyne. The wye serves two purposes, however. A locomotive that can only be easily run in one direction can be turned around on it, its true, but the Class 113 is a unidirectional locomotive, theres a passing siding at Bechyne, and most importantly, theres a freight customer on the wye.

DB #115154-7 and 440524-7 in Munchen Hbf
Title:  DB #115154-7 and 440524-7 in Munchen Hbf
Description:  DBs Class 115 electric locomotives, of which 115154-7 on the left is one, are actually Class 110 and 113 units which have been redesignated for local and autotrain services. Classes 110 and 113 are in turn variants of the original DB E10 Class electrics introduced in 1956, being produced until 1969, with all units being redesignated Classes 110 and 112 in 1968, with an additional Class 114 being created through reclassification of the last 112 Class units in 1988. In addition, in 1991 the older Class 112s were reclassified 113, eliminating Class 112 as a Class designation. These locomotives, while they obviously vary in specifications, hence the different classifications, put out 5,000 horsepower (impressive for 1956), and can run between 120 and 160 Km/h, depending on how theyre equipped. Originally, they were only rated for 130 Km/h, but the higher-speed variants were introduced both from new production and requalification of older units. The prototypes had only been rated for 125, but this was raised so that they could be reclassified as express locomotives. The Class 440 EMU on the right is of an entirely different era, however. Marketed by Alstom as the Coradia Continental, and DB have operated these since 2008. However, they have a longer history in Britain, where they were used on First Great Western starting in the early 2000s, with later production units being classified as Class 180 Adelantes (The earlier Class 175 Units were just called Coradias or Coradia 1000s.). These are actually very fast trains by diesel standards, being capable of operating at 125 m.p.h. The 440s are EMUs, however, as Alsthom market the same carbody series as either. The diesel version is classified as Class 640 or 648 on DB.

CD Class 130 Electrics
Title:  CD Class 130 Electrics
Description:  I took this one in Hradec Kralove, a city in the far east of Bohemia, just on the border with Moravia. These are all Class 130 electrics from the 1970s, built by Skoda, and they're not particularly fast or impressive, although it should be noted that they still are important in Kralovsky Kraj, the region in question, working locals and freights, out of line with the norm of EMUs handling local services. Notice the water spout between the units on the right!!!! Ceskoslovenske Drahy (the old pre-1993 operator) didn't get rid of steam until 1982, and many of their steamers are still in mainline excursion service, so a lot of the steam infrastructure is still in place, up to and including roundhouses and steam shops!!!

CD 150015-6
Title:  CD 150015-6
Description:  I also took this in Hradec Kralove. This is a Skoda Class 150 electric, dating to, at the earliest, 1978, but possibly newer. They were among the last electrics built under the old pre-1989 regime, and it can be said that these locomotives are much more capable than the 130s, being able to operate at 140Km/h (86 m.p.h.) on the level with a 10-car passenger train. This is adequate for most of their assignments, as the Cesky Drahy network is still very, very primitive, although not necessarily any worse (and in many cases better) than in the U.S., and is also fairly flat. Only the Pendolino and the very fastest EC and IC-numbered trains go faster, and then only up to 160Km/h (100 m.p.h.). In the near future, it's expected that the fastest lines will be upgraded to 200Km/h (125 m.p.h.), but that's still a few years away. Partly in preparation for this, since 1996 a number of Class 150s have been upgraded to Class 151s, capable of 160Km/h.

Title:  CD #150225-1 in Hostivar Yard
Description:  This taken at a new trainspotting position I discovered a few weeks ago while waiting at Nadrazi Hostivar (in the distance on the right). Its a pedestrian bridge over the north throat of the yard, which I had noticed before but never taken seriously as a spotting position. Now I know its actually a nice spot. This Class 150 electric was running light, although where it was headed I dont know.

Title:  CD 151014-8 at Hlavni Nadrazi
Description:  One of the unusual things about my trip to Warsaw is that my train departed from Hlavni Nadrazi rather than from Holesovice. Here's my train for Poland, Eurocity 109 "Comenius," but it wasn't going to be a through trip on this particular day, as there are only a few that you can take, and I wasn't there at the right time. CD 230041-6
Title:  CD 230041-6
Description:  Heres a rather odd class of electric locomotive, the Class 230. Built by Skoda from 1966-1967 for Ceskoslovenske Drahy, these streamlined, very retro-looking locomotives are still in service on Ceske Drahy today, although some were exported to Bulgaria in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Theyre rated at 3,080Kw, or 4,130 horsepower, which would still have been very impressive at the time, and they have a maximum service speed of 110Km/h (68 m.p.h.), meaning that theyre already obsolete for express passenger services. This one is marked, however, for the CD Cargo business unit, so its probably well-utilised.

CD 230061-4, Edited Version
Title:  CD 230061-4, Edited Version
Description:  This is another class of locomotive that I have relatively few photos of. Its a CD Class 230 electric, which is a mixed traffic locomotive that nowadays is used primarily for freight. This one is painted in the new CD Cargo livery. Originally Skoda built 110 of these between 1966 and 1967, but theyre far rarer now. Ive been unable to get a full roster anywhere, however. They have 4,130 horsepower going to four axles, and can achieve only 110Km/h, which might explain their relegation to freight duties. Theyre also limited to using 25,000 volts AC at 50Hz, unlike many CD electrics that can use multiple voltages. Each unit weighs 88 metric tonnes. The later Class 240 electrics from 1968-1970 are similar, and some 230 Class electrics have been rebuilt to make them 240s.

CD 242206-7 in Karlovy Vary Hlavni Nadrazi, Edited Version
Title:  CD 242206-7 in Karlovy Vary Hlavni Nadrazi, Edited Version
Description:  I spotted this unit in one of the stub-end platforms, and noted that its a Class 242 electric, a class that I liked when I first arrived in the Czech Republic, but rarely got to photograph since its designed to run on 25,000v 50Hz current, and therefore rarely sees service near Prague. These units actually arent as old as they look, as although they use a car body style introduced by Skoda in the 1950s, they were actually built in the period 1975-1981. They have 4187 horsepower (3080Kw), and can run at up to 120Km/h (75 m.p.h.), meaning theyre not speed demons, but can work local passenger trains and freights.

Description:  In this photo the train is harder to make out, but thats kind of the point. The huge cloud of snow enveloping the train further adds to the dramatic sense of speed. The crazy thing is that few trains running through Hostivar are doing much more than 60 Km/h.

Title:  CD 363079-6 in Karlovy Vary Hlavni Nadrazi, Picture 2
Description:  #363079-6 worked my return train to Prague, and although this photo is a bit dark I decided to include it anyway. The quality of light varied on the way back, but it actually stayed light quite late.

CD 363117-3
Title:  CD 363117-3
Description:  Here you can see the size of the cranes being used to build the new station facilities at Cercany, which appear really to be overkill given the small size of most of whats being built. Nevertheless, the reason I posted this shot is that I like how the locomotive, CD #363117-3, looks.

Title:  CD 363117-3
Description:  Some of the long-distance locomotives are also being painted blue and grey, from blue and yellow, green and yellow, or green and grey, and several other schemes. This one was actually coupled to a train in the older green and grey scheme.

CD 371004-3 and 371015-9 in Praha Hlavni Nadrazi
Title:  CD 371004-3 and 371015-9 in Praha Hlavni Nadrazi
Description:  This was after our arrival on the CityNightLine service in Praha Hlavni Nadrazi. Our sleeper was a first class one, operated by JLV, making it actually the only Czech sleeper on the train, as the rest were DB (and possibly SBB, I dont remember). The train was heavy enough to be double headed, although as usual it ran under 160Km/h (99 m.p.h.) on Ceske Drahy. The trailing unit was #371015-9. I noted that both units were named. #371004-3 was named "Otik," and #371015-9 had a common Czech womans name, although Ive forgotten it. Does anybody know it?

CD 371015-9 arriving at Nadrazi Holesovice
Title:  CD 371015-9 arriving at Nadrazi Holesovice
Description:  This was another more or less successful pan, which was probably too successful, without enough blur in the background. This Eurocity was carrying one of my friends visiting from Britain.

BLS 465018-0 Heading Freight Train through Spiez Bahnhof, Picture 1, Edited Version
Title:  BLS 465018-0 Heading Freight Train through Spiez Bahnhof, Picture 1, Edited Version
Description:  Spiez bahnhof hosts trains from SBB, BLS, and DB (Deutsche Bahn, of Germany). BLS run a considerable number of freight trains through the passenger station. I didnt get the number of the trailing unit, but these both appear to be Re465 Class electric locomotives.
