CD 111011-3
Description:
These Class 111 electrics are mainly used for switching in Praha Hlavni Nadrazi, although they turn up other places as well. Here #111011-3 was making up an express for either Linz or Vienna (Wien), I dont remember which.

CD 113003-8
Description:
Now...back to the electric railway to Bechyne. This was the train I took, not the preserved original one (which does occassionally run railfan trips), but the modern one, however loose a sense. This Class 113 electric is probably about 30 years old or more, and would never normally be used for much but switching the yard of a large mainline station, but obviously it would be wasteful and bad for the track on this single-track branch to have a 163 or 363 class running this service. The dim light you see here is partly an illusion, as it was slightly gloomy out by this time of day, it was late in the day, and I only had 200 ISO film. This, however, was one of my last shots before I switched to Tri-X, which is 400.

Train to Bechyne, Picture 2
Description:
Here the train is entering the wye at Bechyne Zastavka, a request station that is the last on the line before Bechyne. The wye serves two purposes, however. A locomotive that can only be easily run in one direction can be turned around on it, its true, but the Class 113 is a unidirectional locomotive, theres a passing siding at Bechyne, and most importantly, theres a freight customer on the wye.

CD Class 130 Electrics
Description:
I took this one in Hradec Kralove, a city in the far east of Bohemia, just on the border with Moravia. These are all Class 130 electrics from the 1970s, built by Skoda, and they're not particularly fast or impressive, although it should be noted that they still are important in Kralovsky Kraj, the region in question, working locals and freights, out of line with the norm of EMUs handling local services. Notice the water spout between the units on the right!!!! Ceskoslovenske Drahy (the old pre-1993 operator) didn't get rid of steam until 1982, and many of their steamers are still in mainline excursion service, so a lot of the steam infrastructure is still in place, up to and including roundhouses and steam shops!!!

CD 150015-6
Description:
I also took this in Hradec Kralove. This is a Skoda Class 150 electric, dating to, at the earliest, 1978, but possibly newer. They were among the last electrics built under the old pre-1989 regime, and it can be said that these locomotives are much more capable than the 130s, being able to operate at 140Km/h (86 m.p.h.) on the level with a 10-car passenger train. This is adequate for most of their assignments, as the Cesky Drahy network is still very, very primitive, although not necessarily any worse (and in many cases better) than in the U.S., and is also fairly flat. Only the Pendolino and the very fastest EC and IC-numbered trains go faster, and then only up to 160Km/h (100 m.p.h.). In the near future, it's expected that the fastest lines will be upgraded to 200Km/h (125 m.p.h.), but that's still a few years away. Partly in preparation for this, since 1996 a number of Class 150s have been upgraded to Class 151s, capable of 160Km/h.

CD #150225-1 in Hostivar Yard
Description:
This taken at a new trainspotting position I discovered a few weeks ago while waiting at Nadrazi Hostivar (in the distance on the right). Its a pedestrian bridge over the north throat of the yard, which I had noticed before but never taken seriously as a spotting position. Now I know its actually a nice spot. This Class 150 electric was running light, although where it was headed I dont know.

CD 151014-8 at Hlavni Nadrazi
Description:
One of the unusual things about my trip to Warsaw is that my trann departed from Hlavni Nadrazi rather than from Holesovice. Here's my train for Poland, Eurocity 109 "Comenius," but it wasn't going to be a through trip on this particular day, as there are only a few that%you can take, and I wasn't there at the right time. Therefore, I would have to change in Bohumin to EC102 "Polonia."

CD 230041-6
Description:
Heres a rather odd class of electric locomotive, the Class 230. Built by Skoda from 1966-1967 for Ceskoslovenske Drahy, these streamlined, very retro-looking locomotives are still in service on Ceske Drahy today, although some were exported to Bulgaria in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Theyre rated at 3,080Kw, or 4,130 horsepower, which would still have been very impressive at the time, and they have a maximum service speed of 110Km/h (68 m.p.h.), meaning that theyre already obsolete for express passenger services. This one is marked, however, for the CD Cargo business unit, so its probably well-utilised.

CD 230061-4, Edited Version
Description:
This is another class of locomotive that I have relatively few photos of. Its a CD Class 230 electric, which is a mixed traffic locomotive that nowadays is used primarily for freight. This one is painted in the new CD Cargo livery. Originally Skoda built 110 of these between 1966 and 1967, but theyre far rarer now. Ive been unable to get a full roster anywhere, however. They have 4,130 horsepower going to four axles, and can achieve only 110Km/h, which might explain their relegation to freight duties. Theyre also limited to using 25,000 volts AC at 50Hz, unlike many CD electrics that can use multiple voltages. Each unit weighs 88 metric tonnes. The later Class 240 electrics from 1968-1970 are similar, and some 230 Class electrics have been rebuilt to make them 240s.

CD 242206-7 in Karlovy Vary Hlavni Nadrazi, Edited Vervion
Description:
I spotted this unit in one of the stub-end platforms, and noted that its a Class 242 electric, a class that I liked when I first arrived in the Czech Republic, but rarely got to photograph since its dcsigned to run on 25,000v 50Hz current, and therefore rarely sees service near Prague. These units actually arent as old as they look, as although they use a car body style introduced by Skoda in the 1950s, they were actually built in the period 1975-1981. They have 4187 horsepower (3080Kw), and can run at up to 120Km/h (75 m.p.h.), meaning theyre not speed demons, but can work local passenger trains and freights.

Express Pan at Nadrazi Hostivar
Description:
Ive done a number of express pans, of course, and train pans generally, but its only a rare opportunity when I can get an express in the snow. Snow, or at least powder, inevitably magnifies the sensation of speed in a photo, or for that matter in real life.

Express Pan at Nadrazi Hostivar, Picture 4
Description:
In this photo the train is harder to make out, but thats kind of the point. The huge cloud of snow enveloping the train further adds to the dramatic sense of speed. The crazy thing is that few trains running through Hostivar are doing much more than 60 Km/h.
