I've been seeing these inspection/maintenance cars quite a bit in Cercany, probably because they're verifying that the corridor reconstruction is being done correctly. When I took this, Cercany was in a much earlier stage of its reconstruction, though. |

CD 110032-0 In Snow On North Throat Of Hlavni Nadrazi (date is a guess) |
Description: |
Praha Hlavni Nadrazi, like most big city stations in the world, has a few switchers waiting at any given time to switch coaches, and Hlavni Nadrazi has the advantage of having an all-electric fleet. Most of these are Class 111s, but this one is a 110, which is a bit rarer. The bluish hue of this photo makes it look like it was bitterly cold, but in reality it wasn't so bad. |

Description: |
Class 111 electric locomotives are used a lot in Ceske Drahy stations for switching coaching stock, but I have occassionally seen them on locals and freights. This one had just brought in a cut of coaches that would be ultimately pulled by a 363 electric. |

CD 363127-2 In The Snow At Hlavni Nadrazi (date is guessed) |
Description: |
Class 363 electric locomotives work passenger and freight trains on all of the electrified mainlines in the Czech Republic, and I've of course posted photos of them before. This one was sitting on one of the outer sidings of Praha Hlavni Nadrazi waiting to pull an express to Ceske Budejovice, which was being made up by #111011-9, which I've already posted a photo of. Note that 363127-2 is painted in an advertising livery instead of the standard Ceske Drahy green and yellow. |

CD 363130-6 On Zelecnicni Most (date is a guess) |
Description: |
As I was walking along the Zelecnicni Most to the East, the sun went behind a cloud, casting Prague into gloom. In response, I switched my Lomo to 1/60 and f5.6, worried that I wouldn't get anything otherwise. The result was that when this Rychlik came rumbling over the bridge, I took the shot, and it was so overexposed as to be abstract. I played with it in Photoshop, though, and got this what I think is beautful Lomo shot with the aura of the sun in from of the train, grit all around, and the feeling of the awesome power that is a train. :-) The irony is that 363 130-6 is a very clean, green, electric locomotive. |

I took many, many different versions of this shot while waiting for the "Hungaria" to take me to Berlin. This locomotive would be our power, but for the moment it was waiting for the train to arrive with Slovak power on the point. Eventually, I decided to walk onto one of the bridges over the River Labe to get a more panoramic view of the city, but another advantage was that I got this series of freight train photos, all of them brutal-looking enough to remind me of the Mohawk Division, even if the mainline through Litomerice is electrified and the Mohawk Division is not. |

CD 682007-0 in Praha Hlavni Nadrazi, Picture 3 |
Description: |
I took this at the start of a trip I took with my aforementioned friend to Hradec Kralove. We had decided on it more or less on a whim, almost cancelling the trip because of massive flooding the previous day, which was still being cleaned up. Ultimately, although Moravia was badly damaged, Bohemia escaped well enough so that trains were running on the 26th of June, when we left. This wasnt our train, though, as Pendolinos to the East run via Pardubice, rather than Hradec, and in any case this one was for Vienna (Wien). This was the first time I had seen one in Hlavni Nadrazi, so me and my friend took several minutes to get photos and video of it. Luckily, I also had my real camera again, since I decided the occasion was worth adding to the backlog of film. |

CD 714021-3 |
Description: |
Here our train was just coming into view, allowing us also to see the ancient station building of Stara Hut, over in the distance to the right of the train. This shot I think conveys the simplicity of this station, as the only serious construction that went into it was the platform, which is so low that in the United States the train would probably be equipped with stepboxes. Czechs, however, are generally more fit than Americans. |

CD 714021-3 |
Description: |
While the station makeover at Nadrazi Cercany is quite extensive, the only new trains serving Cercany in 2009 were "City Elephant" liveried Class 471 EMUs, and even they had occassionally worked the main since their introduction to the Ceske Drahy system. The traditional Class 451 and 452 "Pantograph" EMUs, in spite of many predictions that they would be eliminated, continued to cover most of the mainline local services, including the re-classified "S9" service, which was really just a continuation of the Prague-Benesov services that had been running for decades. The branchline services to Sazava, Dobris, and other such places continued to be covered mostly by Class 810 railbuses, and Class 714 diesels like this one pulling 010 Class four-wheel coaches (basically unpowered 810s). The Cercany-Prague services via Vrane nad Vltavou, incidentally, were still also worked by the very old Russian-style bi-level coaches pulled by Class 742 and 749 diesels. |

CD 720058-7 in the CD Muzeum |
Description: |
#720058-7 is one of the many Class 720 diesel locomotives that were built in 1958-1961 by CKD for CSD, the DR (in East Germany), Albanian Railways, and the Iraq Railroad. Today, theyre of secondary importance on CD, many of them working for construction contractors, although they were always primarily switchers rather than road switchers, having only 551Kw (739 horsepower). This is in spite of their hood-unit construction, which makes them look beefier. |

Here my train is waiting to leave Hlavni Nadrazi on the first leg of my trip to Litomerice, mostly on advice on my Lonely Planet guidebook. Ive been trying to check off the more important historic cities and attractions in the Czech Republic, one by one, and because I was starting to run out of ideas I decided to do some research. This first connection to Vsetaty would actually take me through unelectrified territory, so thats why we ended with with a Class 749 diesel. |

CD 749251-5 (date is a guess) |
Description: |
I took this picture solely to be a locomotive picture. I'm not convinced that it has any other merits, but railfans on Flickr will probably appreciate it if they're not from the Czech Republic. To the best of my knowledge, these Class 749 diesels don't venture out of the country, as all of the Eurocity and other international services are electric. That means that the only way to see them is to come to the Czech Republic! Class 749s were originally built as 750 and 751 Class diesels in 1964-1976 by Ceskomoravska Kolben-Danek (CKD), and then were rebuilt (again by CKD) into Class 749s in 1992-1996. They put out 1478 horsepower, and can reach a maximum operating speed of 100Km/h, although they rarely achieve this because they are usually used on slow branchline passenger services and freights. |

Description: |
Heres another "bespectacled" diesel locomotive, only this time a Class 750. The 750 class is simply an early-1990s rebuild of a 753. Actually, the only original bespectacled diesels were the 753 and 754 classes, so today there are some rebuilt 753 Class units, designated 753.7, and then there are the rebuilt Classes 750, 752 (not to be confused with ZSSK Class 752, which is the same class as CD Class 751), and 752.6. |

CD 751004-3 and 451004 in the Snow, Picture 2 |
Description: |
While I was waiting at the crossing for the train to come, I noticed #751004-3 deadheading 451004 on one of the main tracks, although it was stopped. There was also so MOW equipment on the consist further back. I couldnt tell if the 451 was headed for scrapping, repair, or simply another assignment, but I expect that many 451s will be scrapped soon with the arrival of new "City Elefant" EMUs. The 751 diesels are just as old, though, also dating back to the 1960s. #751004-3 still carries its CSD number on side, this being #T4781004. I dont know if this is for historic purposes (maybe its is slated for preservation), or if its simple laziness, but its interesting anyway. |

CD 751382-3 |
Description: |
While waiting for my next train in Vsetaty, I saw a lot of interesting rail equipment, and found that it was an absolutely great place to watch trains, both freight and passenger. This Class 751 diesel, #751382-3, already had the new CD Cargo logo on the nose. |

CD 753211-2 at Nadrazi Vsetaty |
Description: |
Just after boarding my train, I spotted this Class 753 "Bespectacled" diesel, one of the few times Ive actually been able to get a good photo of one. In this case, I especially like it, as the high-contrast black and white film makes it look even more retro. |

CD 754048-7 at Hradec Kralove Hlavni Nadrazi |
Description: |
When we got to Hradec Kralove, we were treated to the sight of an old, and unrebuilt, Class 754 "bespectacled," or "Brejlovec" diesel. My friend hadn't photographed one of these yet, and I decided to take a few shots too, since I don't know how much longer they'll still be in service. I've been a bit surprised in the past year in that I've been finding these diesels more often, rather than less often, and I can't figure out why that is. Maybe it's that the allocations have changed. |

CD 810103-2, Picture 2 (date is guessed) |
Description: |
I took this as I was boarding 810103-2, which was running completely light (one car only) working a service to Praha-Liben. I would get off at Holesovice, where I would photograph the Pendolino for the first time. |

CD 810198-2 |
Description: |
With the old coal bunkers and other structures to the north of the station knocked down, the Class 810 railbuses running services to Sazava and other outlying towns now sit in the open as they wait, and are easier to photography from the street. |
